Burning

The 78-minute-long video Burning (2007) features the burning of a wooden structure, from ignition through to full blaze, down to the last flickers of light.

The video was filmed on location, near my father’s house in Västra Götaland county in Sweden, and reflects a fascination with the subjective appreciation of moments of personal value, the important yet undocumented moments. Burning became an important work in the processes of thinking about my relationships to the landscape, to the hunting towers themselves and to the people who use them on a regular basis. It eventually came to inform my subsequent photographic series Hunting Towers. The work also explored interests in the concept of the event and creative destruction; how, by destroying one entity (a wooden structure), another is created (ash).
